Yesterday Microsoft shipped Work IQ to general availability — developer APIs live the same day (June 16). Strip the launch language and here's what it is: a shared organizational-context layer that lets AI agents understand who works with whom inside your company, which projects are live, and how decisions actually get made. Microsoft's Foundry catalog now lists more than 11,000 models.
So the model — the thing everyone argued about for two years — is now a commodity dropdown with 11,000 options. The product Microsoft just shipped isn't a model. It's the map of your organization.
Hold that against the AI price war: frontier intelligence is getting cheaper by the week. When the model is cheap and interchangeable, the only durable advantage left is the proprietary context you feed it — who does what, which data matters, how your function decides.
