THE LEVERAGE SIGNAL | Issue #3 | Tuesday, June 16, 2026

THE SIGNAL

OpenAI just filed to go public — the first frontier AI lab to walk onto the stock market. Read it next to two facts from the same news cycle: Anthropic's revenue is on track to roughly double to ~$10.9 billion in a single quarter, and Google, Anthropic and OpenAI are all cutting prices in an open AI price war.

Together those three things say something bigger than "AI is growing." They say the economics of intelligence are about to be repriced in public, every 90 days, with comparables a CFO can pull up in a tab.

For two years, AI spend lived in the R&D corner of the budget — a pilot line nobody had to defend. An IPO changes the genre of the conversation. Once a category trades on public multiples, every finance team has a benchmark, and "we're still experimenting" stops being an acceptable answer.

THE IMPLICATION

This is the quarter AI moves from the innovation budget to the operating budget. And operating budgets get defended with numbers, not narratives.

For you, the function head, that's a fork in the road. The operators who can put one clean figure on the table — this workflow, these hours saved, this loaded cost, this deploy spend, this net — get the budget and the headcount to compound their lead. The ones still presenting "AI is important" slides get their line item questioned, then quietly trimmed.

The AI Wage Gap stops being a thesis about the future. It becomes the list of who clears the next budget review.

THE MOVE

Before your next budget conversation, build a one-page AI ROI memo for ONE workflow. Four lines: the task; hours saved per week × loaded hourly cost; the all-in cost to run the AI; the net. One workflow, one defensible number. Walk in with the receipt, not the vibe.

The people closing the wage gap in 2026 don't have the best AI opinions. They have the cleanest AI math.
